A Sunday Funday in New Braunfels, Texas

Updated: Sep 6, 2022

One weekend back in June, Alex and I went tubing with a few of our friends on the San Marcos River. We opted to stay overnight in New Braunfels and thought we would go out and experience the town after, but we were wiped out from being in the sun all day. Since we paid to stay overnight at The Faust Hotel, we made a pact to see what New Braunfels had to offer on the Sunday and make a day of it.

First, The Faust Hotel is located at 240 S Seguin Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130, which is in historic downtown, so we couldn't have booked a better location. The hotel was so cute and accommodating, and after we'd booked our stay, they sent us a personalized e-mail with our reservation details and a list of local restaurants & night life. You just can't beat those personalized details and quaint touches.

For dinner, we ended up at Krause's Biergarten and Cafe, which is a beautiful spot and offers German and Texas favorites, along with endless options of local, craft, and import beer. They have a German-style open-air biergarten, outdoor seating, or indoor seating. I would like to go back and experience dining in the biergarten, but we were seated indoors, as there was quite a wait, and we asked for first available. We were with two of our friends and their adorable little boy, so we didn't want to wait around too long. They often have live music or hold German cultural events as well. I'm not a big beer drinker, so I got a margarita, and Alex and I split deviled eggs for an appetizer. I got the Texas Schnitzel, Alex got the Jager Schnitzel, Ryan got the Krause's Reuben, and Heather got the Sausage Plate, all pictured below. Everything was delicious, and as long as you like the ingredients listed, I don't think you could really go wrong with anything you order from here. This is definitely a spot we will return to. Krause's is located at 148 S Castell Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Because of the e-mail we got from The Faust, we'd made a brunch reservation at McAdoo's Seafood Co. & Oyster Bar for Sunday morning when they opened at 11 a.m. We woke up a little earlier than we needed to because we had gone to bed so early, so we started our day at New Braunfels Coffee so that I could get my iced coffee fix. New Braunfels Coffee is located at 489 Main, New Braunfels, Texas 78130.

We still had time to kill when we finished here, so we went for a walk in search of a pair of sunglasses I could wear for the day. I'd lost the only pair I brought with me in the river the day before, whoops! It was beautiful out, although already quite hot.

We walked up to McAdoo's about 10 minutes before 11 and realized we were smart to have made a reservation as there was already a long line of people waiting to get in. When I say we loved McAdoo's, I mean we LOVED it. I'm from Louisiana and finding good seafood cooked the way I'm used to can be quite a challenge. This place did not disappoint and seriously reminded me of home. Another thing I loved about this place is that it is located in the old post office, and they had little puns and nods paying homage to the building's roots all over the place. Now onto the food and drinks. Alex got their Bloody Mary, and I got their Frozen Margarita - Sangria Swirl style. We already knew we were going to be happy with our restaurant choice after getting our drinks. I also got their Postmaster Hurricane a) because of the name (I love a good pun) and b) for a taste of home, and I really liked it. We split oysters as an appetizer, I got a small cup of seafood gumbo, and Alex got the Wedge Salad. We split the Redfish Pontchartrain, and they even halved the portions for us and brought each half out on separate plates - so thoughtful! Every dish we tried was exceptional, and we are already itching to go back.

The bathroom doors really cracked me up!

My very handsome brunch date!

Their "Postmaster Hurricane" -- Both a nod to the history of the building and to New Orleans, home of the hurricane.

I am ashamed to say I'm from New Orleans originally and never tried oysters until moving to Texas, but now, I order them often, thanks to Alex. These were so fresh and delicious!

McAdoo's is located at 196 N Castell Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Next, we stopped at Muck & Fuss just for a drink each because it was packed, and we had to sit in the sun for a while before a seat in the shade opened up. Alex has been to Muck & Fuss a handful of times because he ends up near New Braunfels quite often for work, and he always talks to me about it. It's a craft beer and burger restaurant that seems to be the place to be! They now have homemade shakes, both traditional and boozy, that I would love to go back and try. I'd also like to try out their food. Uh oh, a reason to head back to this super cute town! Pictured above are their Sangria and a Muck-a-Rita. Both cold and refreshing for a hot day!

Muck & Fuss is located at 295 East San Antonio, Suite #101, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Downtown Social was our next stop, and I can't even tell you how many hours we spent here. Here, you can drink, game, and/or dine, so we drank, played a few games of pool, bowled several rounds, and enjoyed some fried pickles. They seriously have everything you could think of.

Downtown Social is located at 386 W San Antonio St, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

By the time we finished up at Downtown Social, we were too hungry to wait until we got back to San Antonio for dinner, so we went to Gruene River Grill. I have so many good things to say about this place. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated, their patio is beautiful, and the food was so dang good. Hands down the best fish tacos I have ever had, and the frozen peach Bellini was just as good as their tacos!

Gruene River Grill is located at 1259 Gruene Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Until next time, New Braunfels!
